Pastors' Keyboard

What a summer! We’ve always worked hard in the summers here at Centennial (in addition to taking some well-deserved time away), but this summer we added some major initiatives. We are switching over to the workshop rotation model for our FaithWalk classes grades 1-6, and so we’re ramping up for this, including painting many of our FaithWalk rooms and converting Asbury 3 into a movie theater room, complete with risers and theater seats! And in order to reach new people of all ages, especially young adults and youth, we are adding The Well, our brand-new Sunday evening worship service starting Sunday, September 9 at 5:00 PM with FaithWalk offered at 6:00 PM. Many committees, lay people and staff have been working many hours this summer to get ready for this exciting venture of faith!

That brings me to the reason for the two new staff positions you have seen posted in our Centennial publications this summer—a director of outreach for 5 hours a week and a director of junior high/confirmation ministries for 13 hours a week. In order to start a huge new initiative like the Sunday evening service, we have to have staffing for it. We have added these two new positions so that Melanie Homan and Kelly Swanson can do the massive creative work needed in setting up teams and logistics for the new service--otherwise their work schedules would be extremely untenable. (I believe that we here at Centennial are greatly blessed by their many gifts for ministry and their ability to take this new venture on!) This model of hiring part-time persons—in our case, 5 hours a week in outreach and 13 hours a week in confirmation—who have specific gifts for particular ministries is one that many churches have used for years as they have seen a vision for new ministries. It’s a method we successfully employed while building new ministries in the previous church I served for 11 years on Lake Minnetonka. (By the way, please note that both Donna Draeger and I will continue to work closely with the confirmation students as well!)

I believe that God has called us to reach new people—and to reach people that we have already been successful in reaching. While these changes will touch each of our lives in some way, I am truly thankful that our Church Council and our members are willing to follow the leading of the Holy Spirit in doing these new things. I am committed as your lead pastor to seeing that we continue to honor both the traditional ways and non-traditional ways of being church—both of which can help us reach people with the love of God in Jesus Christ.

Peace and grace to you,
Brian

Children's FaithWalk

Beginning September 16 all 10:30 AM FaithWalk children’s classes will start out in the sanctuary. Children will worship with their families through the Time with Children and then be excused from the sanctuary to go to class. Preschool and Pre K-Kindergarten teachers will meet their students in the south hallway by the Library. Students in grades 1-6 will meet their class leaders in the narthex and/or hallway. All children and teachers need to stop at the FaithWalk Nametag Table and pick up their new color-coded nametag before going in to worship each week. FaithWalk classes for children (and youth) will run until 11:45 AM each week.

Why are our children starting out in the sanctuary each week? There are many good reasons:

  • Children learn to worship by worshipping—so this will provide an introduction.
  • Visitors need to see children, parents, and those who teach so they come away with an accurate picture of who Centennial is. This doesn’t happen when the children and younger adults who are often their teachers are absent form the sanctuary!
  • Our Centennial adults need to see our children and their parents and get to know them.
  • Parents will have 10-15 “child-free” minutes following worship to greet visitors and friends, read bulletin boards, check the welcome center, etc.

Adult FaithWalk-Connectivity

Does it sometimes seem like Jesus has been kidnapped by the Christian Right or Secular Left? Join the adult Connectivity class on Sunday mornings at 10:30 AM in Asbury 1 as they begin Saving Jesus. Featuring leading religious voices of our day such as Marcus Borg, John Dominic Crossan, Matthew Fox, Amy-Jill Levine, James Forbes, and others this 12 session study is sure to generate lively discussion. Each week’s DVD segment will feature a different theologian. Handouts with background material will be available for class participants. Come as often as your schedule permits!

Raising Awareness of Israel-Palestine Issues

United Methodist Women will meet October 4 at 7:00 PM in Fellowship Hall. Rev. Ken Ehrman, husband of Bishop Sally Dick, will speak to us about Israel and Palestine. Rev. Ehrman taught the class on Israel and Palestine at the School of Christian Mission and has recently traveled in those areas. Dessert will follow the program.

All Centennial members and guests are invited to attend to hear this presentation on this vital topic of our time.

Young Adults

Young Adult Bible Study is moving to Sunday evenings after The Well. Join with other small groups at Centennial to share about our faith journey as we grow with the Transformation Journal. Please consider joining a Young Adult group or another small group at the church on Sundays at 6:00 PM.

Young Adult Fellowship will begin on Wed., Sept. 12. Come to our open house from 7:00-9:00 PM each week in the newly remodeled Young Adult Lounge. We will host game nights, coffee houses, a place to study, meet great friends and rest from your busy week. Please stop by!

Mark your Calendars Young Adults! Our great gathering to kick off this exciting new year of life at Centennial will be held on Sat., September 15. Watch for more information on Rally Sunday and in emails to come.

LOGOS

LOGOS stands for Love Of God, Others and Self and is the mission of our senior high ministry. LOGOS will meet on Sundays at 6:00 PM after The Well. We’ll talk about scripture and how our faith applies to our lives in high school, family, sports, and more. This is a time for 9-12th grade youth to grow closer to one another and to God.

LOGOS Youth Council will meet Oct. 2 to discuss plans for the fall, summer mission trip, and hopes for more cost efficient transportation. Meetings are held the first Tuesday at 7:00 PM and all 9-12th grade youth are invited.

LOGOS Kick-Off! Friday, Sept. 21, 7:00 PM
LOGOS kick off party, yo! We’ll take over the space, show a movie in the Movie Room, play video games projected onto a huge open wall, eat great food, play games, and more. Bring a friend!

Wednesday Night Events
Twice a month our high school group will meet at 7:00 PM on Wednesdays for games, food, and hangin’ out in our Youth Lounge. Bring friends—reconnect with church friends. Once a month we’ll begin with worship led by our youth praise band.
