Centennial Outreach

The Evangelism Committee has been working hard to let the public know about our church. 42 cases of water labeled with the church’s name, address, and website were given away to fair attendees when the church hosted the State Fair Park and Ride. During the next four weeks Centennial will have ads running before movies are shown at the Har Mar movie theater. When the new theater opens by Rosedale we hope to advertise there during Advent.

Centennial Serves sign-ups are going well. This is our third year to serve others through this outreach opportunity. There are sites that have openings for the October 7 event. Sign up at the Centennial Serves table in the Lounge, or contact Pastor Melanie.

RAFT (Refugee Assistance Faith Team) has worked hard to welcome the Moo family from Burma. They are arriving from a Thai refugee camp where they have lived since 1997. The family of four consists of two parents and two boys, ages nine and four. The RAFT committee has secured an apartment for the family and is currently collecting household items and some clothing as well as money to finance this project. Thank you to the many people who have given household items! As of Sept. 24 financial contributions for the family total $3,247. Future family needs include education, orientation, employment, and transportation.

An adult mission trip is scheduled for Jan. 8-12, 2007. Sign- ups are being taken and transportation and other details will be ironed out. The group will work in New Orleans and stay at a church in Slidell, Louisiana.

Centennial is truly a church that reaches out to others.

Please RSVP at bhacklander@centennialumc.org by Sunday, October 8 so we have an idea of how many will be coming. Child care is provided if requested.

Come one. Come all!

The mission field. The phrase conjures up images from my childhood, when United Methodist missionaries sponsored by my home church would come back “home” to tell us about their work in Ecuador or Nigeria or New Mexico or Kentucky. No doubt our work overseas can be important today when we engage in it with great respect for the people with whom our church works.

But what is our mission field right here? Right here in Roseville, St. Paul, Falcon Heights, Shoreview, Arden Hills, Mounds View, Blaine, New Brighton, Little Canada, Circle Pines, North Oaks, Lino Lakes, Minneapolis, and all the communities in which we reside? There are people right around us who experience a profound need for meaning in their lives, who need a sense of hope, who don’t want to throw away their minds as they seek to live out their faith. There are people all around us who yearn for a compass for their lives, who have a deep need for people who care, who believe in God and would connect with a community of faith but haven’t found one that is caring and relevant.

What I ask you to do is this: Tell me who you see when you go to Starbucks or the SA station or the mall or walk the halls of your children’s schools or play volleyball with community ed at night. Who are we reaching as a church, and who could we be reaching more effectively? Send me an email, write me a note, stop me in the hallway. Tell me what you are seeing. We’re in this together as a church—it’s an adventure! Our Sunday and Wednesday worship, our education, our small groups are all ways to reach this mission field, and can be adapted to make us more open to new people.

It seems to me that this is a good United Methodist path, for John Wesley asked the question of who needed to be reached in his day with the love of Christ—and was innovative and proactive in his responses. And if you look at the leper, the crowds, the Pharisees and powerful religious folk, the children whom Jesus blessed, and many others, Jesus wasn’t exactly afraid to reach out to others either. What’s your mission field?

Shalom to you, Brian

Parish Nurse Notes

Zzzzzz....

Nodding off in the middle of the day? Is it difficult staying awake when driving? Are you waking up frequently during the night? If you answered "Yes" to any of these questions you may be sleep deprived. According to the National Sleep Foundation the average adult needs between seven and nine hours of sleep each night, which most of us aren't getting. Lack of adequate sleep results in decreased productivity, safety concerns at home and work, and may be linked to health problems such as high blood pressure and obesity.

Our teens are also becoming sleep deprived, not getting their required 8.5–9.5 hours of sleep each night. "Sleep serves not only as a restorative function for adolescents' bodies and brains, but it is also a key time when they process what they've learned during the day," according to Jodi Mindell, Associate Director of the Sleep Center at Children's Hospital in Philadelphia.

About 70 million people have some sort of sleep disorder, ranging from insomnia and sleep apnea to restless leg syndrome and narcolepsy. Many people do not admit to having a sleep problem and thus are not treated. More than 100,000 crashes that occur each year are the result of "drowsy drivers", people who have not had enough sleep to be driving safely. Injuries, fatalities and billions of dollars spent on healthcare, loss of property and productivity escalate yearly. The National Sleep Foundation recommends the following Healthy Sleep Tips:

  1. Maintain a regular bed and wake time schedule, including weekends.
  2. Establish a regular, relaxing bedtime routine.
  3. Create a sleep-conducive environment that is dark, quiet, comfortable and cool.
  4. Sleep on a comfortable mattress and pillow.
  5. Avoid nicotine, caffeine and alcohol close to bedtime.
