LOGOS Senior High Group Youth Praise Band LOGOS T-shirts/Hooded Sweatshirts Available The Pastors’ KeyboardThis week we have a guest “Keyboardist,” our Director of Youth Ministries, Kelly Swanson, who wants to share about a particular recent experience with you. We’ll be back with you next time! I recently visited a community in Philadelphia called “The Simple Way.” Upon first reflection, there really isn’t much that is “simple” about it. The community of people I stayed with live in two houses in a rough neighborhood in Philly with an intention of being a presence of Love to their neighbors. They are taking the idea of the Early Church from Acts 2 and putting it into action. “They joined together with the other believers and devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, sharing in the Lord’s Supper and in prayer. And all the believers met together constantly and shared everything they had. They sold their possessions and shared the proceeds with those in need. They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord’s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity.” (Acts 2:42, 44-46) This community runs a thrift store out of one of their homes, offers after school reading for children during the school year, hands out 35 bags of groceries one afternoon each week, gardens on their roof to produce vegetables and spices for the neighbors, cares for the environment, and meets regularly as a group for prayer, meals and sharing. Simple. Yet, I realized while living in a community like this is that our world does not operate in a way that makes that seem simple. We are a world of individuals. Mine. Isn’t that often one of the first few words out of a precious baby’s mouth? We are all about the success of ourselves, and maybe our family. But what about “the other”? What about our neighbor? What about those living in a country I’ve never been to and will likely never go to who are living in poverty? Is being concerned with their well-being simple? I want to be aware of the decisions that I make and how they are affecting God’s children – even if they are children I’ll never know. Our life in the U.S. is often less concerned about taking care of others as it is about making sure we are taken care of. So we don’t look into “simple” things like how much drinkable water we waste each day by flushing our toilets, or whether or not our clothes were made by someone who was mistreated, or if our neighbor doesn’t have enough food on his table to feed a family of five while I indulge in three elaborate meals a day. Maybe it is “simple.” Maybe all we need to do is be intentional about our decisions each day. Intentional to spend time in community to worship God. Intentional to devoting ourselves to the apostles’ teaching. Intentional to share a meal with others each day. Intentional to use grey water plumbing. Intentional to buy from manufacturers who are not using inappropriate child labor. Yet, this simple act goes against most of what I have grown up doing. So it is taking me a while to adjust to a new mindset. But I am starting small…choosing where not to shop, meeting with friends for prayer and communion once a week before work, and flushing less drinkable water down my toilets at home. Am I changing the world? No, probably not, but I am changing me.
