Please sign up to make a blanket, assemble meal packages or food grinders, paint, make bag lunches for the homeless or volunteer at a homeless shelter, home repair, housekeeping, yard work, and much more.

Centennial Church to Sponsor Refugee Family
Centennial Church has once again been offered the challenge of sponsoring a new refugee, this time from the country of Burma. We need to move quickly, as the families are coming in latter September or October. The families are traditionally small, three to five members. We will need the help of our membership to volunteer their time, money, and articles with the foremost need of a core planning committee. Please prayerfully consider how you can help, with your time being one of the most needed resources.

This is such an uplifting mission to be a part of! To volunteer to be on the planning committee contact Karen Rudd, 651.490.5299.

Find Your Path…Share the Journey with our children and youth
Centennial Church is blessed by the presence of many children and youth – and you can share their faith journey and be a blessing to them! Our kids need adult faith role models — please say “Yes!” to the call to teach. Our Safe Church Policy requires that we have two teachers per class each week, so three or more on a teaching team allows flexibility and permits volunteers to take occasional Sundays off. We also need a substitute list.

Please talk with Volunteer Coordinator Jenny Farr, 651.787.0809, or Donna Draeger, Minister of Christian Education, about ways you can be part of our Sunday FaithWalk Teaching Team.

LOGOS Senior High Group
LOGOS Fall Kick-off

Youth Praise Band
Centennial’s Youth Praise Band will reconvene on Sept. 10 with practice from 12:00 Noon–2:00 PM. Lunch is provided. Our first Wednesday Night Worship will be held on Sept. 13 and we will play on Sunday, Sept. 17. Please contact Kelly for more information.

LOGOS T-shirts/Hooded Sweatshirts Available
LOGOS t-shirts and hooded sweatshirts will be available to purchase as of Rally Day One. T-shirts are $10 and Hoodies are $25. All the proceeds will go to our LOGOS programs throughout the year.

The Pastors’ Keyboard

This week we have a guest “Keyboardist,” our Director of Youth Ministries, Kelly Swanson, who wants to share about a particular recent experience with you. We’ll be back with you next time!

I recently visited a community in Philadelphia called “The Simple Way.” Upon first reflection, there really isn’t much that is “simple” about it. The community of people I stayed with live in two houses in a rough neighborhood in Philly with an intention of being a presence of Love to their neighbors. They are taking the idea of the Early Church from Acts 2 and putting it into action. “They joined together with the other believers and devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, sharing in the Lord’s Supper and in prayer. And all the believers met together constantly and shared everything they had. They sold their possessions and shared the proceeds with those in need. They worshiped together at the Temple each day, met in homes for the Lord’s Supper, and shared their meals with great joy and generosity.” (Acts 2:42, 44-46) This community runs a thrift store out of one of their homes, offers after school reading for children during the school year, hands out 35 bags of groceries one afternoon each week, gardens on their roof to produce vegetables and spices for the neighbors, cares for the environment, and meets regularly as a group for prayer, meals and sharing.

Simple.

Yet, I realized while living in a community like this is that our world does not operate in a way that makes that seem simple. We are a world of individuals. Mine. Isn’t that often one of the first few words out of a precious baby’s mouth? We are all about the success of ourselves, and maybe our family. But what about “the other”? What about our neighbor? What about those living in a country I’ve never been to and will likely never go to who are living in poverty? Is being concerned with their well-being simple? I want to be aware of the decisions that I make and how they are affecting God’s children – even if they are children I’ll never know. Our life in the U.S. is often less concerned about taking care of others as it is about making sure we are taken care of. So we don’t look into “simple” things like how much drinkable water we waste each day by flushing our toilets, or whether or not our clothes were made by someone who was mistreated, or if our neighbor doesn’t have enough food on his table to feed a family of five while I indulge in three elaborate meals a day.

Maybe it is “simple.” Maybe all we need to do is be intentional about our decisions each day. Intentional to spend time in community to worship God. Intentional to devoting ourselves to the apostles’ teaching. Intentional to share a meal with others each day. Intentional to use grey water plumbing. Intentional to buy from manufacturers who are not using inappropriate child labor. Yet, this simple act goes against most of what I have grown up doing. So it is taking me a while to adjust to a new mindset. But I am starting small…choosing where not to shop, meeting with friends for prayer and communion once a week before work, and flushing less drinkable water down my toilets at home. Am I changing the world? No, probably not, but I am changing me.

Centennial News

Habitat for Humanity Summer Build
Along with 13 other churches, Centennial helped rehab three houses in St. Paul this past spring and summer. Among the volunteers there were many youth, entire families, friends, work colleagues and folks of all ages. It was truly an amazing collection of talent and enthusiasm totaling over 70 workers, many of whom volunteered for several days. We were well hydrated and nourished by a host of behind the scenes volunteers who prepared and served food, donated beverages and cookies and helped with contacting and general organization. Coordinating all of the breaks and meals were the long standing team of Doris Fischer, Shirley Parker and Jan Pederson. Their expertise makes every thing run smooth. In all, over 120 folks were involved!

Even after 11 weeks of work, it will be a while before these families can move into their new homes. Besides finishing up on details, each family needs to complete their 500 hours of “sweat equity”. When everything is done, there will be a dedication and four families comprising 30 family members will start new chapters in their lives of belonging and home ownership. Thank you to all who helped and kept us in prayer.

Gathering Volunteers Needed
Would you like to volunteer for The Gathering? The Gathering is a respite care program for care givers of early memory loss persons. We meet at Centennial Church on the second and fourth Thursday, 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Social interaction, games, exercise, a bus ride to Lyngblomsten Senior Center for lunch, and music or special programs comprise our day. We are particularly in need of male volunteers, as four of our six clients are men. Please call Jan Daniels, 651.633.8903, for further information. We need you!

Wesley UMC Dinner Volunteers—
Thank You, Thank You

to our Young Adults for taking this challenge and giving the greater part of Saturday, July 15 to this service project; and to our Adults who provided leadership in preparing and assisting with this dinner for 150 people in downtown Minneapolis who hunger and depend upon this Wesley UMC weekly event. As our first time with this activity it was a learning experience for all. Wesley would like us to commit to providing this dinner service on a quarterly basis. The Church & Society Committee would appreciate knowing your continuing interest in doing this and also your feedback and suggestions as to how we might improve on this service.

I do not have enough words to express my gratitude to the members of Centennial Church for their help and support following the death of my cousin, Hugo Sundstrom. For the second time in a little over a year, I have reached out to Centennial and been wonderfully blessed. May God bless all who turned their hands to this task.
