Women’s FaithwalkMonday, July 24, 7:00 PM “Come and See”You just can’t prepare for a trip like we recently returned from. 28 youth and adults from Centennial hopped into three 15 passenger vans on a warm morning in June. After a brief overnight in St. Louis MO, we arrived at the Heifer Ranch in Arkansas where our city and suburban folks from the frozen tundra came face to face with exotic animals, blistering heat, and a lifestyle like we have never encountered back home. Working with the Heifer Ranch gave us a great appreciation for all that the organization does for countries around the world, including our own. It is amazing how much hope you can find in small things when your daily regiment consists of so little. After spending two nights in a simulation of global poverty, living in Tibetan yurts, Mozambique huts, and Mississippi Delta shacks, we were challenged to appreciate our daily gifts like running water, electricity, working ovens, and air conditioning. Yet, working our farm land in 100 degree heat with outrageous humidity prepared us well for the next task at hand. As we entered the city of New Orleans, I don’t think any of us were prepared to see the amount of devastation that still exists. Although the downtown area seems to be back on its feet and operating pretty well, there are still neighborhoods that have been all but untouched since Katrina hit last year. Meeting two of the families that were evacuated because of the flooding was life changing. Both Miss Antoinette and her family, and Walter and his family, have returned to New Orleans with a glimmer of hope; believing that even though their previous life was wiped away, a new and exciting life awaits them. Yet, the new life is still many months down the road as we only began the process on our trip. Hauling their entire worlds to the curb in front of their house put a lump in my throat even though the belongings had no emotional attachment for me. All I could think about was, “how do you rebuild after a loss so huge?” Yet, they are rebuilding. “Come and See”...that is the message Miss Antoinette shared when we asked her what we should tell others back home. Come and see the story of New Orleans. I ask you all to continue to keep these families and New Orleans in your prayers and that you, too, would consider helping rebuild that city. Thank you so much for your support and prayers for our senior high mission trip this summer! We couldn’t have done it without you! Kelly Swanson Clergy KeyboardJoan Lilja’s reflections for charge conference...on the future as we reflect on the past… Centennial Church is a gem in our community...its people, its facilities, its presence in our community...it is a healthy environment in which to be a part. Its worship, music ministries, education opportunities, service and mission opportunities for persons of every age and stage are top notch. Roseville has changed since I arrived...the complexion of the area has grown older, school enrollments are changing, senior living facilities have increased. It remains a vibrant community economically through shopping centers, and all. Centennial Church has changed...as I arrived in 1993 we were celebrating 40 years, and have since celebrated 50 years of ministry here. Many of us have gown grayer, including me! Our ministries have reflected our community. The institutional church has been changing...in its forms of worship, its ways of enlisting volunteers for ministry, its outreach into the community, its means of communications, its education ministries, and small group ministries. Change in all areas of the church’s life are intensified in the ever-changing culture in which we are participants. When I looked at Christian Education statistics this morning, I found that our numbers of leaders, children, youth, and adults in educational endeavors has not changed greatly...in 1994 it was 835, and in 2005 it was 833. But the distributions within it have changed, with fewer children and that is of great concern. Average Sunday FaithWalk attendance varies from year to year depending on membership and many other factors...as high as 318 and as low as 159. This is reflected in the schools, Red Robin Preschool, and other community activities. Centennial is doing much to foster young adult ministries, small group ministries, and outreach and servant ministries. As we expand our worship opportunities, it is bound to deepen the spiritual life of all our people. Faith-forming small groups for study and fellowship are also key to the growth of Centennial. This is a regional church, drawing people from many miles around us. It will remain so as persons choose their church based on factors other than neighborhood. Small groups are the arena in which people become connected with one another through significant relationships. Bible studies, faith in life studies, book groups, music groups, and service groups offer such opportunities for all ages. As I look at the future as a Christian educator, I believe that our children and family ministries will continue to be critical. I am excited that Donna Draeger will be your Minister of Christian Education as she has a strong background in early childhood education, and experience in ministries with children and families. Our families will be the evangelism team for other families. With Roseville’s aging population and senior housing availability, expanding ministries with older adults has potential. Our seniors are currently active in tutoring, mission to the community, habitat and much more. Expanding these opportunities through study and service trips may be a ministry area. Continue to focus on worship, education, and service...with open hearts, open minds, and open doors. You are a strong and vital church...with wonderful people, a great staff, and commitment to one another and to making disciples for Jesus Christ. You are theologically solid, reflective, and inclusive. You have a heart for mission, and a generosity that knows no bounds. Grow into the future with hospitality for each and every person, at every age and stage of life as you reach into this community and far beyond. Thank youI want to thank you all for the many blessings you have given Jim and I on our wedding. We have been overwhelmed by your thoughtfulness—whether it was a card, gift, or congratulatory hugs, handshakes, or conversations, we have both felt very cared for and blessed. Centennial folk, A big thank you to the 28 Centennial volunteers, including 6 girls from Girl Scout Troop 2052, who worked at the Feed My Starving Children Center in Brooklyn Park on June 17. Thank you to the volunteers for sending food and hope for the future to these children.
