Those traveling on the BWCA Confirmation Trip July 15–20 Kayla Bilderback Membership changesWithdrawal Parish Nurse NotesLast week my family learned firsthand the importance of protective headgear. In one evening we experienced a bike accident and a pitch to the head. Fortunately, both victims were wearing helmets. The bike accident resulted from speed and an inability to negotiate a sharp curve. The rider somersaulted over the handlebars, landing on his head in the woods. The helmet protected him from a concussion or a more serious head injury. The crack extending halfway through the top of the helmet showed the impact of the fall. Standing at home plate watching a high speed ball coming at you sometimes doesn't allow you enough time to react. A pitch to the head can drop you in an instant resulting in a concussion, which is signified by headache, dizziness, loss of consciousness, nausea and vomiting. These symptoms usually resolve in a few hours or days. Head injuries are most common among children younger than one and teenagers older than 15, with boys sustaining twice as many injuries than girls. Causes of injury include motor vehicles accidents, falls, accidents during sports and recreational activities and workplace incidents. (Merck) Wearing a helmet reduces the risk of head and brain injury, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, yet only 15 percent of children under the age of 14 wear a bike helmet. A helmet should be worn by everyone, young and old alike. A helmet needs to be worn correctly. It should sit on top of your head in a level position and should not rock forward and back or from side to side. The straps must always be buckled. If worn properly, you should not be able to fit the palm of your hand on your forehead. (NFPA) If you experience an accident which damages the helmet, be sure to replace it with one that has been certified and approved for use by an independent testing laboratory. Protecting your head from injury while biking, playing sports, or working is common sense. Remember to wear your helmet! In Partnership with Lyngblomsten, Julia Nordling Pastors’ Keyboard“Let us rebuild!” These words from Nehemiah were the basis of the daily Bible study for the youth mission trip to New Orleans. Jerusalem had been destroyed by war, New Orleans by hurricane – different forms of destruction, but the responses to both disasters are quite similar. In both, there was/is a desire to rebuild, to return to the places that become part of who we are. We might not be able to understand why a community would want to stay and rebuild in a place that seems apt to be damaged again. I, for one, can’t imagine returning to a home that had been submerged in 12 feet of water. But if we go back in our spiritual history, we see again and again that place is important. Jerusalem was repeatedly destroyed as competing groups sought to control it – yet people continue to this day trying to rebuild it – we have strong, personal connections to the dwelling places of God. God still resides in the churches where people were baptized, married, and buried. God still resides in the battered homes where families once celebrated Christ’s birth, death, and resurrection. How does one walk away from the places where God has been? Perhaps we can’t walk away from the places that God has touched us. Against all of the odds, the call continues to go out, “Let us rebuild!” and the people of God respond by piling into vans, driving across country, and doing their part to rebuild some of the places of God. May we always hear the call, wherever it comes from! Melanie Fellowship OpportunitiesASSETS (Adult Singles) shop at Trader Joe’s at Arbor Lakes followed by lunch at P. F.
