Some are nearby, some in out-state Minnesota, some out of state. Some are in a conference format, some camping, some cabin, some canoeing and hiking. All are part of an extensive camping program of the United Methodist Church. Camperships are offered through the Minnesota Conference, and Centennial provides a $25 campership for our campers. Talk to Joan Lilja, Kelly Swanson, or Lisa Schuler for more information. Brochures are available in the church office or at the Welcome Center. Camps with a CUMC ConnectionAdventure Day Camp The theme this year is “Peace Talks” with Bible stories, multi-cultural activities, and always, a picnic on Friday! Early Bird Registration provides an additional $10 off the fee. Deadline is May 8 to have registrations in to the church office for early bird discount, or get your registrations in as soon as possible. Invite your friends to join you. A great time is had by all! Today’s Youth as Leaders Ko-Wa-Kan #106 in Ely, MN Grandparent/Grandchild Camp Labor Day Weekend Family Camp Did you attend or work at Frontenac Methodist Camp? Pastors’ KeyboardSo this is it! This is the month that the much anticipated Da Vinci Code will be showing at a theatre near you! There will undoubtedly be much hoopla when it is released, with a variety of religious figures weighing in on the historical claims of the book. We will hear people take strong stands embracing this book of fiction as truth. We will also hear the book and movie described as an enemy of God, meant to undermine the truth and authority of the church. We will hear the opinions of many popular people in religion, but as one of your pastors, I figured it would be helpful for you to know my perspective on The Da Vinci Code and other such things like The Gospel of Judas. I am all for reading and enjoying good fiction that keeps you on the edge of your seat, or in my case, up until two or three in the morning and unable to put the book down! I am also for studying historical Christianity and the many ancient texts that didn’t make it into our canon of scripture. I don’t base my life, my faith, and my beliefs on either fiction or these non-canonical texts. But I do think they are a great gift to us, in that we are reminded of the diversity of belief among the first Christian communities (something that continues to this day). A book like The Da Vinci Code can also challenge us to delve deeper into the roots of our faith tradition and may create the gentle nudge we need to pursue learning more about our Christian history. You will have the opportunity to do some further exploring of historical Christianity and what it means for us today at Centennial. To learn more, watch for the Summer brochure with information about upcoming classes and speakers! Everyone is invited to make our week extra-special by letting us know what you treasure. Stop by the VBS table in Linden Court any Sunday, May 14 to June 11. We’ll have a supply of index cards for you to write short comments about what you treasure. If anyone has connections to the field of archeology, we’d love to talk to you! It would be wonderful to introduce this profession to the children. Do you have old foreign coins and “artifact looking” objects that will help us set the scene? Last year’s All-Church VBS Celebration was a lot of fun! Mark your calendars for Thurs., June 15 at 7:00 PM and watch for details. Always, always we need volunteers in a variety of roles during VBS week. Volunteer and registration forms are at the Welcome Center and will be at the VBS display beginning May 14. Register your children, grandchildren, and/or invite your neighbors to VBS. Together, we can make this another memorable, shining week of blessings.
