Gardening, washing windows, yard work...these are the springtime chores that make you feel all those muscles you didn't realize you had. When we overdo activities and use improper body mechanics, our back lets us know. Back pain affects nearly everyone sometime during their life. It is one of the main reasons for doctor visits and missed work. Once you have injured your back, you can treat it at home by applying cold compresses or ice packs to the affected area for 20 minutes. Follow this with a warm compress or heating pad for 20 minutes to loosen tight muscles. This can be done several times per day to relieve those sore spots. Taking medications such as Ibuprofen, Aspirin or Tylenol will help to keep pain under control. It's also important to keep moving, so avoid the aggravating activities and maintain your daily lifestyle as much as possible. For some people, acupuncture and chiropractic care can also help. If there isn't any improvement in 72 hours, see your doctor. Some back pain can indicate a serious problem such as a herniated disk, spinal stenosis and sciatica, which all involve pressure or pinching of a nerve. These conditions may require prescription medications, physical therapy, electrical stimulation or surgery. Taking care of your back and avoiding injury can be done by:
Your back performs so many important functions, do your best to keep it in good working order. The Pastors' KeyboardI’ve been in the process to be ordained as an Elder in the United Methodist Church for almost nine years. As I round the final corner and see that black and white flag waving over ordination on May 31, I have been giving a great deal of thought to what it means to finally be ordained. I recognize in ordination both a deep privilege and a significant obligation to God, to servant leadership in the Church, and a lifetime commitment to leading ministries of Word, Sacrament, Service and Order. What I have also realized is that most of my life has been given in service to God. We don’t need to be ordained to be called to exemplify in our lives Jesus’ command to love God and neighbor. We all live in grace, and are called to offer that grace to others. As United Methodists, we believe in the ministry of all Christians, that we are each called through our baptisms to a ministry of service, offering Christ’s outreaching love to others. As United Methodists, we also believe that our mission is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. I was recently reading our Book of Discipline, (yes, I might be a little geeky and actually read the Book of Discipline by choice) and it states that all churches are called to proclaim the gospel, seek, welcome, and gather persons into the body of Christ. We are called to nurture persons in Christian living, and send persons into the world to live lovingly and justly. In the coming months, it is my hope that we can be in intentional conversation about how we go about seeking, welcoming, and gathering persons into the community of the body of Christ here at Centennial, then nurturing and sending them forth into service. This is the mission before us! Melanie Fellowship OpportunitiesBridge Club will meet again in September.
