Think Summer – Think Camp!

On Sunday, March 11, we will be sharing the good news about United Methodist Camps. Visit the display in Linden Court and learn about the Campaign for Camp Minnesota with the goal to raise over $2 million for construction and renovation projects at our conference camp sites. Envelopes for donations will be available.

Pick up a copy of the 2007 Minnesota Annual Conference Camp booklets and read about the over 150 camp experiences offered for all ages (adults, too!) and interests. Horse camp and tree house camp continue to be very popular, as do the mini camps for younger elementary children. There are a variety of sports camps and arts camps for children and youth.

We want camp to be affordable for everyone and will give a $25 campership to all children and youth from our congregation who request it (additional help is available if there is financial need). Turn your completed camp registration form in to the church office, along with your deposit, and we will send it in with the campership. Most camps also offer an additional “Early Bird Discount” of $10 if the total fee is paid by May 15.

If you have questions about camp and which experience might be the best fit for your child feel free to call the office and talk with Donna Draeger, 651.633.7644, Ext. 13.

Centennial News

Coming Soon – a new approach to Sunday Morning FaithWalk

Our Sunday Morning FaithWalk Committee and our Children and Family Ministry Committee have teamed up and begun looking at making the shift to a Workshop Rotation Model for our children’s classes next fall. In a rotation learning setting, the same Bible story is taught for several weeks and the children rotate to a different workshop each week. The story remains the same but children encounter it different ways – because the more different ways children explore a story or concept, the more it is reinforced in their memories. The variety of experiences keeps the interest level high. Workshop Leaders teach the same lesson (with some age appropriate adjustments) to each new class coming in. We are excited that this format will allow even more adults at Centennial to use their unique gifts to interact with our kids while making shorter term commitments that fit their schedule.

Shifting to Workshop Rotation also creates an exciting opportunity for transforming some of our rather beige classrooms into inviting, interactive learning environments. We recognize the need to be more intentional about welcoming families with young children. Part of being welcoming is making a good first impression and we believe kid-friendly spaces will make a big difference!

Look for a display in Linden Court on Sundays March 11 & 18 with more information. Check out the photos of how some churches have re-done their classroom spaces. There will be a short informational meeting on Sunday, March 25 at 11:45 AM – come to ask questions, learn more, and decide how you can be a part of this new thing!

Fair Trade Coffee Sale

Fairly traded coffees, tea, cocoa mix, and chocolate bars will be available for purchase March 18 during Fellowship Time.

Connectivity to feature “The Centered Life”

Sundays March 4, 11, 18 and 25 at 10:30 AM
The Centered Life initiative helps Christians focus on the big questions of meaning, belonging, and making a difference in the world. What feels like the center of your life? Do you believe in the myth of the “balanced life”? DVD presentations and discussions will deal with being awakened to God’s presence, living your faith in every situation, contributing your unique gifts to the world, and being supported by your community of faith. “The Centered Life” by Jack Fortin is available but not required reading.

"New Dreams: The Journey of Karen refugees* from Burma to Minnesota”

The Men’s Club March 19 dinner program will feature a presentation by Joel Luedtke, Director of Refugee Programs, Minnesota Council of Churches. The Centennial RAFT committee facilitated the settlement of the Moo family who are refugees from Burma ( Myanmar). Many Centennial volunteers worked with representatives of the MN Council of Churches Refugee Program in helping the family deal with issues of housing, health, language, schools, transportation, jobs, government assistance etc. We hope to highlight this relationship and recognize the wonderful work of the RAFT committee and Centennial’s volunteers as well as learn more about the process of refugee settlement. All are invited to attend; sign up at the Welcome Center. Tickets: $8.00 per person for dinner and the program. Dinner: 6:30 PM, Program: 7:15 PM.

*The "Karen" are a group of people from a region of Burma ( Myanmar) who have become refugees because of a communist government suppression. The Moo family are Karen people. Here is a link to more information about the refugees.

To Do Lists. Do you make up to do lists, to help remind you of the important things that need to be done? I usually have several lists going at a time. Here’s a list of things I wanted to share with you (and it will be one more thing to cross off my list! – the simple joys in life)

THANK YOU for all of your prayers on Wed., Feb. 21, when I met with the Board of Ordained Ministry for my ordination interview. Jen Hill, our Missions chair, also had her interview. We will be ordained at the Minnesota Annual Conference in St. Cloud on Thurs., May 31 at 7:00 PM. I’m relieved to have the interview process over and excited about ordination. It was a comfort to know that people were praying for us during this process.

www.feedingtheroot.blogspot.com — Check it out! Each day you can read a reflection written by different people in the church. Youth, young adults, single people, married people, working people, retired people – you can read reflections on faith and scripture from all of them in the coming weeks. You can find a link to this blog from Centennial’s webpage, www.centennialumc.org.

Bible 101. Have you ever wanted to learn more about something, but didn’t feel you had the required knowledge base to attend a class? Brian and I will be leading several classes on Sunday mornings at 10:45 AM that will offer an introductory study of the Bible. Perhaps this can be part of your Lenten Discipline.

As I look out my office window, there’s a snow pile from the parking lot that is so high, it completely blocks the view of the house across the street. We may be covered in snow now, but Lent means Easter is right around the corner. We live in faith and trust that in a matter of weeks, signs of resurrection and new life will be popping up all around us.

Until then, we continue the story together… Melanie

Thank you

To my church family–
Thank you so much for your generosity in helping Mary provide Walmart gift cards for my soldiers. Most of them used these cards to purchase gifts online for their spouses and families. Your gift was truly a blessing! God bless,

Todd Lewis
U.S. Army, Baghdad, Iraq
(A picture of Todd and the soldiers is on the Thank-You-Gram board)

Thank you to all our donors for the youth Mardi Gras Silent Auction.  Our New Orleans style auction party was great fun and a great success!  We could not have been as successful without the help of over 130 donations, and many busy hands in the kitchen preparing all that wonderful Jambalaya.  Thanks for all your investment in our youth and the recovery process for New Orleans.

Kelly Swanson and the Centennial Youth

Several Sundays ago I requested your prayers for Shannon, a friend from Omaha, Nebraska, who was about to have some delicate surgery. The surgery was successful, and the healing is well underway. Shannon is in rehab now and is making amazing progress. Shannon, her family, and I are all very grateful to you for your prayers.

Our heartfelt thanks, Bobbi Peterson
