Sunday Worship Schedule Next Centinel Deadline:
February 26 at 12:00 Noon Enter the StoryAsh Wednesday, February 21 Katie Schneider-Bryan named Northeast District SuperintendentFormer Centennial pastor, Katie Schneider-Bryan, will begin her appointment as Northeast District Superintendent beginning July 1. Katie served at Centennial from 1985-93 when it was still uncommon to have women clergy. Even more uncommon was that her husband, Dan, was also a pastor making them one of a few clergy couples in Minnesota. When deciding if becoming a pastor was the right choice for her, Katie said she had few women clergy role models. Now she is one of those role models at a time when more women than men are entering seminaries. Katie made many contributions to Centennial, including the leadership of Disciple Bible Studies, COSROW, and ensuring gender balance on committees and ministry teams. She was a great spiritual leader who led with compassion and competency. She empowered members of the congregation to explore their faith and gave meaningful sermons, including a sermon where she used her potter’s wheel as an object lesson. Our blessings to her as she begins her new role as District Superintendent. Mano A Mano Mission ProjectOn April 28 approximately 200 Girl Scouts from the North Pines Service Unit representing Roseville, Falcon Heights, Little Canada, Shoreview, and Vadnais Heights will be assembling school kits. These kits will be donated to Mano A Mano, a Minnesota based non-profit agency dedicated to providing services in impoverished, rural Bolivia. The kits will help support the youth education program by providing desperately needed basic supplies. The Centennial Mission committee has agreed to partner with the Girl Scouts by collecting supplies for the kits. Please consider providing a donation of pens, pencils, erasers, protractors, 12” ruler, notebook (5” x 7”), and crayons (small packages). Donations will be accepted until April 21 in collection bins located at the Welcome Center. Bob Nienaber Organ RecitalBob Nienaber will present a 20-25 minute organ recital at St. Louis, King of France Church on Tuesday, Feb. 27 at 12:35 PM. Works by Bach, Cherwien, Mendelssohn, and Widor will be performed. This is part of the “noon-time recitals” at the church. The church is located at 10th and Cedar Streets in downtown St. Paul. There is no admission charge. The concert will immediately follow the 12:00 Mass. Lenten Soup Supper Wednesdays begin February 21Soup and bread will be provided for all. Come and enjoy the company of others and then stay for Wednesday Night Worship Services at 7:00 PM. Red Robin Preschool Opens RegistrationIt’s not too early to be thinking about preschool for next fall! Registration for the 2007-2008 school year at Red Robin Preschool here at Centennial UMC is open. The preschool, serving both the church and the community for over 40 years, offers a morning class for children 3-5 years old. Socialization and school readiness skills are emphasized in a variety of group and individual experiences. We believe guided play is the work of the children. For info, a tour of the preschool, or to enroll, call Nan, 651.636.7644, Ext. 19. Centennial NewsA New Ministry TeamThe Visual Arts Ministry Team has been created for the purpose of overseeing the recruitment and display of visual arts in the church building, including both traditional works of art (paintings, sculpture, prints, fiber arts, etc.) and commemorative arts and memorabilia. Artworks will be presented in permanent, temporary and rotating displays in the common areas of the church. The Visual Arts Team will also provide assistance and guidance to:
Members of the Visual Arts Ministry Team are Marilyn DeLong, Lisa Fertig, Mary Ann Krinkie, Chris Rohde, Steve Rohde and Dorothy Wingard. Initial projects include cataloguing existing pieces of art at CUMC and developing a policy for display of visual artwork. YogadevotionThe Spring sessions of Yoga will begin on March 8. Please check the Welcome Center or Parish Nurse bulletin board for registration forms. Payment and completed forms can be left in the Parish Nurse mailbox. Bring a friend! Stay in touch with the church websiteVisit www.centennialumc.org to stay in touch with Centennial! Have you visited the Audio Library recently? You can find audio files of entire services, sermons, or special music. Pastor Brian’s ruminations and a link to Pastor Melanie’s blog are also new to the website. Parish Nurse NotesLocation, Location, Location… If you or your child cut your finger at church, do you know where to find a Band-aid? When the parishioner next to you in the pew collapses, could you run straight to the AED, take it from the cabinet and bring it back to the person in need? Injuries and medical emergencies can occur at any time at home or church. It’s helpful to know where to find supplies and equipment when needed. Centennial has first aid kits along with disposable CPR masks located in the following areas: Lounge and downstairs kitchen, Nursery, Ushers room, Sacristy, office work room and Red Robin Preschool. The Missing Child Policy, instituted here in the fall of 2005, provides information and procedures to follow when a child becomes missing while at church. These packets give instruction on directing volunteers and how to conduct a search. One can find these packets outside of the church office, the computer/resource room, next to the upstairs elevator, and downstairs near the choir room. When a fellow parishioner requires the AED, you will find it on the wall in a large white cabinet to the left of the elevator on the main floor. The AED will give verbal instructions on when and how to use it, if indicated. Take some time to locate these items throughout the church, so if the need arises, you’ll know right where to go to find the correct equipment. And remember, it’s always a good idea to learn first aid and CPR. You never know when you might have to help someone! In Partnership with Lyngblomsten, Pastors’ KeyboardI was at a remarkable gathering at Hamline's Klas Center the other night. Clergy and spiritual leaders of Christian, Buddhist, Muslim, Jewish, Native American, and Hindu faith traditions in the St. Paul area gathered to break bread together, to share in each other's company, and to hear from some of our public servants such as St. Paul mayor Chris Coleman. We heard Dr. Edward Creagan, American Cancer Society Professor of Clinical Oncology, speak about ministerial health. Dr. Creagan's remarks were consistently incisive and funny. But as good as Dr. Creagan was as a speaker, as trenchant as he was on the topic of staying fit for ministry, I found myself most moved by the table grace. No, it wasn't offered by a high-standing religious professional, or by a Hamline professor, or by a luminary in the public eye. It was offered by three children. First a Muslim child offered a spoken prayer in her language. Then a Jewish boy sang a blessing in Hebrew. Then a Christian girl asked for God's presence among us. The gathering uttered a quiet amen after each prayer. And I thought to myself, "And a little child shall lead them." Grace is all around you. In the words of Jesus, may we have ears to hear. Brian Emma Norton Tea and FundraiserThe United Methodist Women (UMW) will hold their annual Tea and Fundraiser on Saturday, March 24, at 2:00 PM. This event is for the support of Emma Norton Services, which provides transitional and permanent affordable housing, as well as supportive services, to homeless, and at-risk-of-becoming homeless, women and families. Included in the program will be a three-course tea, special music, and a program by Jon Katherine Martins, who will appear as Emma Norton. A sign-up sheet and free tickets are at the Welcome Center. Other churches in the Metro East District have been invited and we look forward to learning more about Emma Norton and the housing services which began in 1917. Your generous tax-exempt contribution will insure that the work of Emma Norton Services will continue. Thank youOn behalf of the Red Robin Preschool and the teaching staff, we wish to thank our generous Centennial family for their support, both financially and with their presence, on Red Robin Sunday, January 28. We are also very grateful to all the wonderful volunteers, past and present, who have given their time and talents to the preschool. These gifts strengthen our ministry with children and their families in our church and the community. We especially want to thank all those individuals who helped this year with table set-up, preparing food, serving, and cleaning up for the luncheon. Be sure to see the names of all those who helped with this event on the church’s “Thank-You-Gram Board.” Nan Carlson, Director Remember in PrayerSteve Koehn, Todd Lewis and Eric Nevalainen, who are in active military service.
