Bob Nienaber, Director of Music/Organist, will present an organ recital in the Centennial sanctuary on the 39 rank Schantz organ. The program will include works by Bach, Buttstedt, Dubois, and Mulet. Jane Nienaber will also be joining Bob on some organ duets by Burkhardt and Callahan. There is no admission charge and a free-will offering will be received. Child care will be provided and a reception will follow.

Youth Sunday

November 19 is our Youth Sunday at Centennial! On this wonderful morning, just before Thanksgiving, our 7-12th grade youth will be leading us in worship at 9:00 and 10:30 AM. Our focus this year will be “meeting the need.” We invite you to come and hear a message of how God wants us to meet the needs of those around us. Come, be challenged in your own faith as you hear God’s Love preached through the mouth of “babes.”

UNDIES Sunday

In addition to Youth Sunday on Nov. 19, we will be collecting underwear for our Mobile Thrift Store. The vision of the thrift store is to bring a variety of clothes to homeless folks so that they can pick out items that are fitting to their bodies and their personalities, as well as meet a physical need of warm clothes for the winter months. The thrift store will offer grocery bags for $1. For $1, each homeless person will be able to purchase all that they can fit into a grocery bag. One of the greatest needs that people on the street have is the basic need of underwear. We are asking the people of Centennial to support the Mobile Thrift Store by donating packages of unopened underwear and socks for men and women, and bras for women. There will be collection buckets outside the sanctuary on Undies Sunday for your donations. Thank you in advance for your generosity!

Operation Christmas Child

The FaithWalk mission project for November is Operation Christmas Child. Children (and families!) are invited to share the joy of Christmas by filling a shoebox with gifts for a child. Postcards with details will be distributed in classes and also available at the Welcome Center. We encourage all interested members of the Centennial community to join in this project. We need your filled boxes by November 26. The youth will be going to the distribution center to pack boxes for shipping in early December.

House of Faith Nursery School Toy Donations

We also have the opportunity to help House of Faith Nursery School in Minneapolis by donating new and gently used toys. Families in the neighborhoods they serve will be invited to come and “shop” for gifts for their children.

Please drop off items by Sunday, December 3.

Advent/Christmas Decorations

Your contributions will be used for poinsettias and other seasonal decorations to enhance our worship area. Fill out the Advent/Christmas Decoartion form (pdf file) and return to Julie Elholm in the church office by Sunday, November 12.

Wednesday Night Worship

7:00 PM
The November worship theme is “Scaffolding of Faith: Prayer Practices.”

  • Nov. 1: Taizé Worship
  • Nov. 8: Youth-led Service
  • Nov. 15: Worship in the Round
  • Nov. 22: Thanksgiving Eve worship at North Como Presbyterian at 7:30 PM

Pastors’ Keyboard

I just got back from Colorado after spending three days looking at colleges with my daughter Caitlyn, a high school senior.  I will be forever grateful to have had this experience with her: road-tripping within Colorado, with music playing and conversation popping; hearing her dreams and hopes; finding that there were those times when we both said, “I’ve got to get a project done (be it either homework or sermon work).”

While we were at one college, we went to the college’s honors program office.  We were looking at the bulletin board outside, and one of the staff came out with great enthusiasm to meet us and tell us about the program.  She returned to her office.  We then walked the halls to check out the classrooms and other facilities for the program.  As we were walking past the office again, another staff person with great friendly energy popped out of the office and asked if we would like to meet the head of the honors program.  We did indeed.  And so on a late Friday afternoon this professor gave us 20-30 minutes of his precious time, full of enthusiasm and confidence about the program, wanting to know about Caitlyn and helping her know how to “get in.”  It was obvious from the creases on his face that students at this large university would not fall through the cracks in his program.

I think the church can learn a lot from this public university.  An infectious enthusiasm.  An enthusiasm that seeks out newcomers when we see them—how painful it is to see a newcomer standing alone on Sunday morning! Putting relationships first.  Everyone on the same page.  Asking what the newcomer’s needs are—are we asking this question in everything we do here, from worship to education to social action to Sunday coffee time?

I believe that God’s creativity often comes from the newcomer, from the edge of what’s currently in vogue.  Jesus came from the edge into his nation’s life, unafraid to encounter both religious and secular leaders.  The apostle Paul came from the backwaters of the Roman Empire into the very heart of things with Christ’s good news for everyone.

What if…what if the visitors who were originally attracted here — but didn’t stay — created their own congregation? What would it look like?  Would it be greatly different from what Centennial looks like now?  Could it be that we would be pointed toward our mission field for 2006 and 2007….

Can we “pop out of our office”?

Brian

Parish Nurse Notes

BeFriender Ministry coming to Centennial!

In the next few months you will be hearing a lot about a new ministry at Centennial. The BeFrienders, a listening presence, provides pastoral care for people in all kinds of difficult or transitional situations. A BeFriender is a trained lay volunteer who extends the care of a faith community.

Could you be a BeFriender? We’re looking for persons who can listen with compassion, accept people as they are, respect another’s spiritual journey and embody the caring presence of God.

Perhaps you know of someone who could benefit from a BeFriender visit. The parishioner could be homebound, going through a divorce, experiencing medical problems or just feeling lonely. Keep these people in mind as you learn more about this listening ministry.

In the near future we will be offering information sessions to let you know about training, time commitment and the way you can make a difference in someone’s life. As United Methodists, we believe in Christ’s ministry of outreaching love.

Listen….is God calling you to be a BeFriender?

In Partnership with Lyngblomsten,
Julia Nordling, Parish Nurse

Shoe Spree

On the evening of October 19 a group of Centennial Serves volunteers arrived at the Midway Payless Shoe Store to help 19 refugee children and youth choose a pair of boots or shoes and a pair of socks. The purchases were made with a discount from Payless, and the balance paid by Centennial. These refugees were selected by the Minnesota Council of Churches and were from Guinea, Togo, Liberia, and Russia ( Moldova). The 15 volunteers from Centennial included Susan, Celeste, Juliet, and Noelle Laske, Jean Rieke, Cathy and Elizabeth Rieke, Erin King, Sia Kenewa, Faye and Dennis Hunt, Marilyn and Ray Roberts, Bill Nara, and Shirley Parker. Pictures from the Shoe Spree are posted on the Thank-You-Gram board.

Linus Project

We wish to express our gratitude for the wonderful turnout on October 7 for the Linus Project. Not only did you make 44 needed blankets, you also provided heaps of enthusiasm, good will, and caring. You are all great examples of Centennial Serves. Much appreciation to those who could not attend that day but contributed blankets. If you wish to make more blankets, please notify Barb Robinson.

Thank you

Greetings from the YWCA of Saint Paul! I want to thank you for your generous donation of birthday bags (one of the 2006 Centennial Serves projects)! Your gifts were welcomed by the participants of the Y’s Kids Club and the Youth Achievers Programs. The expressions on my entire staffs’ faces were absolutely priceless as they learned of this amazing gift from Centennial. With cuts in education and nonprofit programming, it is such a wonder to be given such a blessing! May God bless you all.
