All You Really Need to Know: In Kindergarten or Before?A free presentation by Carol Weber Rohde, Executive Director of Resources for Child Caring, will be given at Centennial Thursday, January 18 at 7:00 PM. We will look at the connection between early childhood education and brain development. More and more, doctors are talking about “brain architecture”; what helps or hurts the growth of the brain; what we can do to make sure our children’s brains develop the right way. In addition to looking at how brain structure affects children’s futures as students and adults, Weber Rohde will discuss the impact of teachers and child care providers on our children’s early journeys. The event is co-sponsored by Centennial’s FaithWalk and Red Robin Preschool. For more information, contact Donna Draeger or Nan Carlson. For child care, contact Jean Moline, 651.633.7644, Ext. 38. Help Seniors Maintain their Independence"I don't know what I would have done without you!" This is a statement that Store To Door volunteers and staff hear often, yet it's heartwarming every time. Store to Door, a nonprofit organization, connects adults with goods and services required to maintain independence, delivering groceries and prescriptions in the seven-county Metro area for 22 years. In 2006, we served over 1,500 aging and disabled individuals. Each week, Store To Door delivers 400 orders to senior and disabled individuals who are unable to shop for themselves. Volunteers take phone orders and enter them online; volunteer shoppers fill orders at one of five Cub stores; and delivery staff bring the groceries right into customers' kitchens. Store To Door gives personal attention to customers, so much that order takers and delivery staff often know a customer's favorite breads, or what substitutions they will accept. Members of Centennial have been volunteering for Store to Door from the beginning, with four members currently active as volunteers. Join them in serving seniors through the following positions: Volunteer Shopper: Meet with other volunteers at the Cub on University Ave. in St. Paul (Midway) weekday mornings around 7:00 AM once a week, to shop for two hours. If you enjoy grocery shopping, it's a great way to get exercise, meet other dedicated volunteers, and help our seniors. Volunteer Order Taker: Call clients from home one day a week (days, nights, or weekends) to take orders over the phone and input them online. It takes about two hours a week, access to a computer and average computer skills. Choose a day of the week to be your call day. You'll have a chance to form longer-term relationships with clients, who are very appreciative of the calls and conversations they have with their order takers. To find out more, please contact Karen Liu, Volunteer Coordinator at 651.642.1892, Ext.127 or email karen@storetodoor.org. Visit the website, www.storetodoor.org, for more information. RARES January eventOn Thursday January 11th, RARES (Retired, Almost Retired, Energetic Seniors) will host representatives from the Roseville Senior Center which is located in the former Fairview School building on B2 near Fairview. The Roseville Senior Center—what is it? What programs does it provide? What services, entertainment, transportation or educational opportunities does it provide? What is the Senior Dining Program? Does it have volunteer opportunities for seniors? What about informal recreation? We will have lunch at noon in Fellowship Hall with the program following. Sign up at the Welcome Center or call Joyce Rosene, 612.781.3500, for further information. There will be a few New Year's surprises as part of the day. Luncheon is $6.50 and paid at the door. Come and begin the New Year with a congenial group of people! Mardi Gras Silent AuctionSunday, February 18 2007 Offering EnvelopesOffering Envelopes for 2007 are available for pick up in Linden Court through January. If you don’t find your packet, contact Liz Murray, 651.633.7644, Ext. 35. Parish Nurse NotesWash your hands! Diseases that spread because of inadequate hand hygiene include the common cold, flu and infectious diarrhea. Salmonella and E. coli, food-borne illnesses, are also contracted this way. Soap and water, along with alcohol based hand sanitizers are the best way to keep your hands clean and prevent the spread of disease. Proper hand washing technique involves the following steps:
Make sure to wash your hands after using the restroom (public and private), handling garbage, blowing your nose, sneezing and coughing into your hands, before and after touching a sick person, treating wounds, preparing food and petting animals. Our hands are capable of so many things! Take the time to keep yourself and your family healthy this winter…wash your hands! In partnership with Lyngblomsten, Baby Shower for the Moo FamilyThe Moo family is settling in and preparing for a new baby in February. RAFT is hosting a baby shower for Eh K’Nyaw on Jan. 14 and we would welcome any contributions you’d like to make.
If you’d like to contribute a gift for the baby shower, please contact Pamela Isham at pisham@ishamconsulting.com or 651.690.3537, or Tracy Fodstad, tfodstad@msn.com. With colder weather ahead, we could still use some warm sweaters, boots and gloves/mittens for the two adults, as well as maternity clothes. All sizes should be “small.” If you have any items to donate, please contact Pamela Isham. Thank youThanks to all who have prayed for my sister-in-law, Patty McGath. Her throat surgery went well and the doctor told her she is cancer free. Prayer is a powerful tool. God’s blessings, Marlene McMaster I wish to express my appreciation to all Centennial members for the generous response to the Lyngblomsten resident gift collection and the “mitten tree” for the St. Paul Department of Indian Work. The Lyngblomsten box was over-flowing with additional packages. The mitten tree was fully covered with 75 hats, 16 sets of glove/scarf/mitten/hat combinations, 30 scarves, and 44 pairs of mittens and gloves: 165 items! What a privilege to deliver these things, representing a congregation that never stops reaching out generously to others! Jan Daniels A big thank you to all the Centennial instrumentalists who added to the season’s festivities. Both the Carols during Fellowship Time and the 5:00 PM Christmas Eve service were special gifts to the congregation by each of you. What a nice gift of your musical talents. Thanks especially to Ryan Olsen, our “associate director.” His directing class in college certainly paid off on Christmas Eve. We hope that all of you will give our congregation the same gift in future years. Dave Magnuson We thank you so much for your supporting our family. May God bless you all. O Moo Family Remember in PrayerRemember in prayer Steve Koehn, Todd Lewis and Eric Nevalainen, who are in active military service. Steve is training in Arizona; Todd and Eric are now serving in Iraq.
