Centennial News

Red Robin Sunday is January 28

Everyone is invited to the Red Robin Lasagna Luncheon from 11:30 AM - 12:30 PM. A freewill offering will benefit the preschool’s programs. We’re also celebrating volunteers — past and present. Come and share a memory of your volunteer experience. No sign-up is required. Come for good food, fellowship, and a good way to support an important outreach of Centennial. For information, contact Director Nan Carlson, 651.633.7644, Ext. 19 or Preschool Chair Jan House, 651.636.0372.

Red Robin Opens Registration

It’s not too early to be thinking about preschool for next fall! Registration for the 2007-2008 school year at Red Robin Preschool here at Centennial UMC opens in February. The preschool, serving both the church and the community for over 40 years, offers a morning class for children 3-5 years old. Socialization and school readiness skills are emphasized in a variety of group and individual experiences. We believe guided play is the work of the children. For info, a tour of the preschool, or to enroll, call Nan, 651.636.7644, Ext. 19.

Book Fair on Sunday, February 11

Did you know that February is I Love to Read Month? On Sunday, Feb. 11 the church will be hosting a book fair throughout the morning. Denise Karau from Cokesbury (the retail arm of our United Methodist Publishing House) will be here with a variety of books for all ages. Books will be available at a 20% discount, plus tax and you may pay with check, credit card, or cash. This is not a fundraiser but rather simply an opportunity for you to browse through a great display of books and purchase items at a discount. Included in the display will be a selection of Bibles, books with a Lenten focus, and books that will be used in future classes.

Singers Invited!

You’re invited to join the Chancel Choir in performing John Rutter’s Requiem. The concert will be on Palm Sunday afternoon, April 1 at 4:00, and the dress rehearsal will be Saturday morning, March 31 at 10:00. Rehearsals will be Wednesday evenings, 7:30 to 8:00-8:15, beginning January 31. All singers high school age and up are welcome. Contact Bob Nienaber, 651.633.7644 or email.

Final report on 2006 from the Finance Ministry Team

The December giving set a new record for Centennial United Methodist Church.  You gave $127,000 in the month of December, 2006. Your generous giving with some under spending by a few work areas enabled us to pay all 2006 expenses and end the year with a surplus which allowed us to balance the 2007 budget and add money to the Capital Reserve Fund. Thank you for your generous support of our programs and ministry.

Coffee with the Clergy

Ready to explore the step of faith called membership at Centennial?  Then you are invited to the Coffee with the Clergy, Sunday, February 4 from 2:00 – 4:00 PM, with Pastors Brian and Melanie and Minister of Christian Education Donna Draeger.

Learn about opportunities for learning and serving at Centennial, as well as United Methodist beliefs and history.  We’ll have light snacks and childcare available.  Sign up by contacting Brian Hacklander.

The Mardi Gras Silent Auction and Lunch
is just around the corner!

On February 18th from 10:00 AM -1:30 PM we will host our second youth auction to help raise money for the summer youth mission trip to New Orleans.  This auction/lunch will be a festive event in the theme of Mardi Gras (since it will be held just before Lent begins and because we’ll be going to New Orleans) where you will be able to bid on items such as hand-crafted pottery, jewelry, mittens, bags, blankets and much more as well as tickets to the Timberwolves, golf balls, fly fishing lessons, a freshly cut Christmas tree delivered to your house next Christmas, and much, much more!  Please join us for lunch (a freewill donation will be taken) and to bid on items as we raise money for a great cause!

Bob Nienaber Organ Recital

Bob Nienaber will present a 20-25 minute organ recital at St. Louis, King of France Church on Tuesday, February 27 at 12:35 PM. This is part of the “noon-time recitals” at the church. The church is located at 10th and Cedar Streets in downtown St. Paul. There is no admission charge. The concert will immediately follow the 12:00 Mass.

Notes from the Library

Do you need some extra reading material? The Library has back issues of Alive Now, New Christian Century, New World Outlook, and Response. Do you need to hear a certain sermon message again, or perhaps listen to the Bible on audio cassette while sitting in traffic? We have a number of tapes in the Library waiting just for you! Some materials are free for the taking. Current periodicals, CDs and DVDs may be checked out. Stop by the Library and check us out, or contact Susan Blakeslee, 763.574.1215.

Parent-Child Story Time

The CUMC Library Committee, Children's Faith Walk and Red Robin Preschool invite you and your child to Parent-Child Story Time, Thursdays beginning February 1 - March 8, 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM in the church library. This time is for parents and their children ages 3-5*. We’ll enjoy stories, songs, finger plays, take-home activities, literacy resources for parents and a chance to meet other parents. Sign up at the Welcome Center or at Preschool. Questions? Contact Susan Blakeslee 763.574.1215, Nan Carlson or Donna Draeger 651.633.7644.

*Please note: Story Time is for parents and children together; this is not a drop-off activity.  Age appropriate stories and activities are planned for children ages 3-5.  Please do not bring younger children.

Office Deadlines and Calendar Scheduling

Please follow these simple rules to make sure your meetings and activities are publicized and scheduled:

  • Call Lisa Schuler in the church office to calendar all meetings and activities at least seven days in advance of the meeting. Following this procedure will help ensure that your reminder cards and/or e-mails are sent out in time, and that your items make it into the church bulletin calendar and the Centinel calendar.
  • Julie Elholm will send reminder cards and/or e-mails for Ministry Team and Committee meetings.  These are sent out by Wednesday of the previous week, and will only be sent if meetings are on the calendar by the Monday of the previous week.
  • Reminder cards and/or emails for other activities or Fellowship groups will be sent out by Julie upon request. Postage will be charged to your group.
  • To have sign up sheets/small posters made for the Welcome Center, submit items to Deb Olsen a week in advance.
  • Each Ministry Team, Committee and Task Force needs to keep minutes. Minutes are to be e-mailed to Julie, if possible, for distribution. Please collect the e-mail addresses of the members of your groups and give them to Julie. Distributing minutes and reminders via e-mail saves on time, postage and paper costs. If e-mail is not an option please get a hard copy of the minutes in as soon as available. As a rule, we do not send attachments with e-mail because there are so many different kinds of ‘spam blockers’ and other concerns regarding attachments.  Julie will certainly send any minutes and attachments in the body of an e-mail.
  • The bulletin deadline is on Wednesday at noon for the following Sunday. Late items cannot be accepted due to layout and printing time requirements. Please contact Deb Olsen with any questions.
  • The Centinel deadline is at noon on the Monday before the Centinel is run. Please check the calendar or the website Centinel index page for Centinel deadline dates. Articles may be edited due to space constraints. Contact Deb Olsen with articles or questions.

Whenever possible we will try to accommodate your group in the room you wish to use. Sometimes this is not possible due to heavy schedules, especially on Wednesday nights. Room usage needs to remain flexible due to scheduling of other events such as funerals. Please understand that we cannot always provide the space you requested for your group, especially at the last minute. We hope this information will assist you with your church activity planning and scheduling. Please contact Lisa Schuler or Pastor Brian if you have any questions.

Habitat for Humanity Dedication

All the work is finally completed and the families are ready to move in to the houses we worked on last summer. All volunteers are invited to a formal dedication and tour on Saturday, Jan. 27, at 1:00 PM. We will gather at the 108 Garfield site. Come help us welcome these folks to a new stage of their lives.

Pastors’ Keyboard

The NBA. Sports Illustrated. Bill and Melinda Gates. The United Methodist Church. What do they have in common? At first glance, not much. The crazy thing, is that they are officially partners – groups of people working together to sponsor the mission work of Nothing but Nets (www.nothingbutnets.net.)

Did you know that malaria takes the lives of one out of every five children under the age of 5 in Africa? A bed net can cover a family of four while they sleep at night, protecting them from mosquitoes and malaria. Most of the mosquitoes that spread malaria bite late at night or in the early morning, so bed nets help prevent malaria.

Some of the challenges people in the world face seem insurmountable. I find it hard to even listen to news about HIV/AIDS in Africa, civil war and genocide, because what can I do about it? But there are things we can do, to help improve the lives of others, and we don’t have to be a billionaire, Hollywood personality, or research scientist to do it.

Ten dollars buys a bed net for a family of four and covers the cost for local community workers to teach families how to use them. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation matches each donation. As a United Methodist Advance Special, all funds go directly towards the purchasing of nets. You can tell your friends you’re working with the NBA. And when it’s all said and done, you will know that some kid, some where, is alive and well, and sleeping safely under a protective net, just as we all sleep under the care of God, who neither slumbers nor sleeps, and keeps our going out and our coming in from this time on and forevermore. (Psalm 121).

Melanie

Donations can be made to Centennial, with “Nothing but Nets” written in the memo line.

Thank you

Thank you to all who have kept my family and me in your prayers and for all the support during my surgery and recovery. I feel really blessed to be a part of our church community.
Amy Mammen

Thank you to Pastor Brian and Pastor Melanie for their love and support, and also to all of our friends at Centennial, for their cards, prayers, and expressions of sympathy at the death of my father, Gerald Dutcher.
Bill and Darlene Archer
